She Left the Light On
A true story about kindness, courage, and the quiet power of care.
Hey, my friend,
Today’s story is about a woman named Sun Meihua from the city of Changsha in China.
She is around 60 years old and owns a small grocery shop.
When she opened her shop back in 2012, some young women who passed by at night told her they felt safe when her shop light was on.
After hearing that, she decided she would keep her light on every night so people walking home late could see the road better and feel less afraid.
She has done this for 13 years now. Every evening before she goes to bed, she makes sure the light outside her shop stays on.
People in her neighborhood started calling her “Streetlight Auntie.”
Many say that seeing her light shining makes them feel safe and cared for.
And, her kindness doesn’t stop there, my friend.
Sun keeps her shop open until about two in the morning so that people coming home late can still buy something if they need it.
Sometimes, if a young woman feels scared to walk home, Sun walks with her.
She even moved her home phone to the shop so that elderly people or children who don’t have mobile phones can use it to call their families.
Some neighbors trust her so much that they leave their house keys with her.
Sun and her husband have lived in that neighborhood for more than twenty years.
She says she does all this because, when she was younger, her neighbors helped her and her family. Now she wants to do the same for others.
Her story shows how a small act, done again and again, can light up more than just a street. It can light up hearts.
So, my friend, what is one small thing you could do this month, something simple you can keep doing, that would make someone around you feel cared for?
Think about it and take action if you can; doing so will not only make others feel good but you too.
That is it for today, and see you tomorrow.
Take care,
Prasad Mairale
